ELIZA — A FATHER'S PHOTOGRAPHS
"These photographs of my daughter,
taken over nearly two decades, tell a story
no text can, for all too easily, given the
circumstances surrounding them, would words
deteriorate into fact and issue, simplistic
psychology, legal briefs, dysfunctional
denials, tabloid accusations, all presently
slipping into the past, desperate and demanding
to be forgotten.
Yet the pictures remain, with a life of
their own.
Much is said these days about the rights
of children, and the joys of their wonder.
Original Eliza was abundant in those joys,
despite the pain she suffered, and equally
abundant in the courage to deal with it,
with often an astonishing and spontaneous
sense of humor. Fighting for her health
-- and her rights -- was a major -- occasionally
overwhelming --- task which we shared with
unconditional love, and sometimes with great
happiness.
All that is gone now, for another persona
runs the fort. But, for seventeen years,
the two of us lived a great and warm human
adventure, unextinguishable to memory. "
